En filminnspilling, en utstilling eller en performance av Smith involverer alltid improvisasjon i samarbeid med de som blir filmet. Prosjektene hennes byr på fremtidsorienterte, nyskapende sammenstillinger av fysiske objekter, filmprojeksjoner, tekstilbannere og livemusikk, med bakgrunn i sosiale settinger og svart kultur.
Den amerikanske kunstneren Cauleen Smith har produsert eksperimentelle filmer og videoinstallasjoner i over to tiår. Opprinnelig utdannet innen musikk, har hun siden sin første langfilm i 1998 senere arbeidet innenfor både film- og kunstverden.
I utstillingen på Astrup Fearnley Museet inngår en ny film bestilt av museet. I samarbeid med Cinemateket vil også et utvalg av Smiths filmer (Drylongso, Film Workshop og Muligheter og Manifestasjoner) bli vist på et stort lerret for første gang i Norge.
Utstillingen er produsert av Astrup Fearnley Museet og kuratert av Rhea Anastas og Mia Locks.

A shoot, show, or performance by Smith encompasses improvisation with those being filmed and generates future-focused, novel arrangements of physical objects, projections, textile banners, live musical performances, and with them, new experiences of Black social life.

Since releasing her first feature film in 1998 after an early education in music, American artist Cauleen Smith has produced experimental films and video installations for audiences in the film and art worlds for over two decades.
Within the multi-room exhibition Smith is premiering a new film commissioned by the Astrup Fearnley Museet. A program of Smith’s films will screen in a cinema for the first time in Norway in a partnership between Astrup Fearnley Museet and Cinemateket.

About the artist:
Cauleen Smith is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects upon the everyday possibilities of the imagination. Operating within multiple arenas with multiple material means, Smith roots her work within mid-twentieth-century experimental film, structuralism, Black experimentalism, Third World cinema, and science fiction.
Smith’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at institutions including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, PA; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Chicago, IL; The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA; Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston, TX; and Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA, among others.
